Permutations #0: A Sonic Journey to Launch Mutants Live

On December 24th, 2024, Mutants Live takes its first breath, and with it comes the release of my inaugural music compilation as DJ MUTANTS: Permutations #0.

This project is not just a collection of tracks but a statement of what Mutants aspires to be—a platform for exploration, transformation, and the celebration of diverse sounds.

The concept of permutations—rearranging elements into infinite possibilities—feels intrinsically tied to what it means to be a mutant: ever-evolving, ever-adapting.

This compilation, consisting of five sets of 14 songs, showcases a mix of my favorite artists across different genres, weaving through decades and geographies during more than 5 hours of music. Each set carries its own identity while connecting to the broader theme of reinvention.

The Inspiration: Wax Tailor & Frankenstein

The journey begins with Que Sera by Wax Tailor, infused with a scene from Frankenstein. The haunting refrain—"Whatever will be, will be"—encapsulates the spirit of experimentation and uncertainty surrounding this project. Like Frankenstein's creation, Mutants Live might stumble or soar, but its existence is driven by a relentless curiosity.

The Five Sets: A Sonic Tapestry

1. Trip-Hop / Downtempo / Chillwave / Synthpop

This set captures grooves and beats that feel like a late-night drive through neon-lit streets. From the atmospheric rhythms of Nouvelle Vague’s Dance With Me to the pulsating beats of !!!’s Dancing is the Best Revenge, this collection mixes introspection and energy. Other highlights include Junior Boys’ In the Morning and Hot Chip’s Huarache Lights.

2. Hip-Hop / Alternative Hip-Hop / Electronic / Dance

A genre-spanning set where Beastie Boys’ raw energy (Sabotage) meets the elegance of Kruder & Dorfmeister (Black Baby). Tracks like Massive Attack’s Teardrop and Daft Punk’s Digital Love showcase the range of electronic music’s emotional core. It’s a celebration of rhythm, rebellion, and the enduring appeal of dancefloors.

3. Indie Rock / Alternative

This set dives into the heartfelt and eclectic world of indie rock. From the transcendent calm of The xx’s Intro to the anthemic power of Arcade Fire’s Wake Up, each track feels like a story unfolding. With contributions from Vampire Weekend, Alt-J, and Grizzly Bear, this set is a tribute to the timeless charm of alternative sounds.

4. Indie Folk / Acoustic

A moment of quiet introspection. This set blends poetic lyricism with raw acoustic beauty. Tracks like Nick Drake’s Pink Moon and Sufjan Stevens’ Chicago ground this set in emotion, while Angel Olsen’s Shut Up Kiss Me and Feist’s Mushaboom bring contemporary flair. It’s a collection of songs that feel like a warm blanket on a cold day.

5. Experimental / Art Rock

For the dreamers and the avant-garde, this set pushes boundaries. From Leonard Cohen’s haunting I’m Your Man to David Bowie’s iconic Life on Mars?, it’s a journey through musical innovation. Tracks like Lou Reed’s Perfect Day and Beach House’s Space Song showcase how art rock continues to redefine itself.
